A Bit About Melissa...
Hello! My name is Melissa Brainerd, and I am a clinical mental health counseling intern from Seattle University. I hold Bachelor’s degrees in Sociology and English, with a concentration in gender and sexuality, as well as a Master’s degree in Education.

I have worked for over 20 years with adolescents and their families, particularly focusing on educational and disability justice. This identity-affirming, trauma-informed work has centered around students and families who identify as first and second-generation immigrants, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, neurodiverse individuals, and those who are disabled or chronically ill, all of whom face systemic obstacles.

Life’s transitions and challenges—whether they are internal, external, or systemic—can become more manageable with some assistance. My role adjusts to your needs by holding space, bearing witness, identifying patterns, and highlighting your strengths. My work integrates a variety of modalities, including Gestalt, motivational interviewing, humanistic and existential theory, all from a trauma-informed, culturally affirming, and strengths-based approach, with the potential to incorporate art therapy, movement therapy, and somatic techniques.

I specialize in working with chronic illness and disability, developmental and life transitions, the exploration and appreciation of self, teen and young adult development, parenting challenges, and college and career counseling. Self-reflection and the work towards change can be challenging, and I appreciate the decision you’ve made to consider counseling.
