What is EMDR therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy that helps people process traumatic memories and distressing experiences using bilateral stimulation. Depending on the clinician and your individual needs, bilateral stimulation may be eye movements, tapping, or alternating sounds.

Through a structured process, EMDR can help you processing distressing memories that may continue to influence your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs about yourself and the world.

What does EMDR help with?

Trauma & PTSD

Trauma doesn't have to come from a single life-changing event. For many, it is the result of repeated experiences that continue to have an impact long after they're over. EMDR can help with distress stemming from single incident traumatic experiences and complex trauma.

Anxiety & Fear

Process distressing past experiences that may contribute to persistent fears, heightened emotional reactions, or feeling constantly on edge.

Negative Self-Beliefs

Process painful beliefs such as "I'm not good enough," "I'm powerless," or "I'm not safe" that may be connected to past experiences.

Grief & Loss

Process distressing memories or experiences surrounding a significant loss, particularly when those memories continue to cause intense emotional distress.

Addiction & Substance Use

Explore distressing experiences, emotional triggers, and learned patterns that may contribute to substance use. Specialized EMDR approaches may be incorporated into addiction treatment to address cravings, triggers, and experiences associated with substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail during EMDR?

Unlike some traditional talk therapies, EMDR does not require you to describe every detail of a traumatic experience. Your therapist will work with you to identify relevant memories and experiences while respecting your comfort level and helping you feel prepared throughout the process.

Will EMDR make me feel worse before I feel better?

Processing difficult memories can sometimes bring up uncomfortable emotions, thoughts, dreams, or physical sensations, both during and between sessions. However, EMDR includes preparation and coping strategies to help you manage distress throughout treatment. Your therapist will regularly check in with you and adjust the pace of treatment based on your needs.

Does insurance cover EMDR?

Many insurance plans cover EMDR therapy, depending on your mental health benefits. We accept a variety of insurance plans, and our intake team will help determine coverage prior to your first appointment.
